Maoi PSSD?

Post  Jdunn8989 on Wed Feb 01, 2012 4:24 am

About 1 year ago I took Remeron and I experienced decreased pleasure during sex. This effect has persisted, but I have noticed a pretty big improvement most days. I blamed Remeron for this problem, but have started to think that this maybe wasn't caused by Remeron. I have my reasons for thinking this. Anyway for the past two months or so I have experienced pretty intense social anxiety as well as depression. With the way I have been feeling I have thought about going on Nardil. My question is do any of you guys think that an Maoi can cause persisting sexual dysfunction? I have read a lot of reports about the sexual dysfunction only being temporary on this drug. Like bad for 2-3 months than completely gone. I wonder why that happens with Nardil. I don't plan on being on this drug permanently, and if I were to stop I would hope to get functioning back. I know anything is possible, but I am worried about taking anything now after what I possibly experienced from Remeron and reading about what a lot of people have experienced from ssris. I would appreciate any advice about this. Thanks

I don't think so, but I don't know for sure. The main thing is to make sure you understand the drug and dietary restrictions. There are many types of drugs I don't think should require a prescription, but this type is not among them. Have a thorough consultation with a doctor before taking anything like this.

I was on Parnate for a short time in the past so I'm aware of all of the restrictions. You know 1 year ago I wouldn't have even questioned giving this drug or any drug a trial, but after reading a lot about what people have gone through I have a lot of anxiety about taking any meds. I understand that the chance I experience an adverse reaction is pretty slim, but I always feel like the worst will happen to me. I have more to lose now than I did in the past. I have a girlfriend that I love and the sex is great, I would hate to screw that up, but at the end of the day without addressing my mental health a lot more could be at risk. I'm in the process of getting into CBT with Boston University, supposedly one of the best in the world, but this isn't a quick fix. Right now I'm just taking it day by day and I will say things aren't as bad as they were 1 month ago. So I guess I will just keep on pushing through for now. Thanks for the response Sonny.

Hi Jdunn,

I don't know if you've read my thread
http://pssd.forumotion.com/t80-new-anti-depressant-less-sexual-side-effect

but please do.

I've been on it for 5 days now. I will let you all know how I get on!

I was on Moclobemide (Aurorix) for about 6 weeks and noticed no change in sexual function. It didn't help with PSSD, but it didn't make things worse, either. The side-effects were few and low-intensity. The only thing I remember is that the drug seemed to mess with my digestion a little.

I am not sure, though, how applicable this is to your situation because Moclobemide is a reveresible MAOI.

Well I've been on it for about 3-4 months now. I went all the way up to 40 mg, but it really seemed to screw with my circadian rhythm. I'd be up all night and feel like sleeping during the day. It might have decreased my sex drive slightly, but maybe due to the extrem fatigue I would experience on it. Also lack of motivation in general. I'm tapering off of it. I'm down to 20mg and feel better. I don't think it really did much for my anxiety and depression anyway. I'm actually feeling myself again, which is good in someways and bad in others. The only last medication I am willing to try would be Nardil, but I think I'm going to try to go med free. I've also recently gotten some relief from smoking quality mj. It takes away, whatever it is that has made me the way that I am. I limit the use though, as I don't want to become a pothead. I really do recommend trying it if you have sexual dysfunction. I've had some if the most pleasurable orgasms in my life when I smoke. If used the right way, it can be natures medicine.

I don't see anything wrong with a moderate amount of marijuana. It probably would be helpful for some. It can also be good for nausea, insomnia, pain, and of course glaucoma.

would be interesting to know the effects of marijuana on neurotransmitters, I started to suffer from hallucinations, even after use of marijuana and I know that those who suffer from hallucinations have high levels of dopamine or dopamine receptors more sensitive..

Marijuana works mainly on the canibinoid receptors. It's mild hallucinogenic property is likely from that as well, although I'm not completely sure on that.
